Region - Haiti’s crisis highlights the role of foreign mercenaries
The inability to find economic opportunities for veterans of past conflicts and the unregulated private security industry have created increased foreign mercenary opportunities.
One month ago, President Jovenel Moïse of Haiti was assassinated in his home by a band of mercenaries. Haitian police have since implicated nearly 40 people for involvement in the plot, including 18 former soldiers from Colombia. Moïse’s death marked the the first assassination of a sitting president in the Western Hemisphere in roughly half a century.
