Mexico - More on militarization

When a president gives the military a greater political and economic role, the threat is that they grab on to it.

My column in World Politics Review this week focused on AMLO’s militarization push. Two of the points I highlight against the increasing militarization are that Mexico’s military has a history of human rights abuses (also read Carin Zissis’s column on the missing 43 students) and that deploying the military hasn’t worked in the past.
